“Hooray! Hooray!! Now We Can Play!!”

It has been quite a journey getting to this point.  For a long time, we collected donations from players and corporate donations as well as a lot of  financial support from our city.  We thought that would all be the hardest part! There were several “meetings of the minds.”  To sourcing the various products and prices, and  determining the best route to go.  Calculating quantity and trying to get everything to Brockville to begin work.  Excitement began when it started to arrive…. and then disappointed when we had some product back ordered.  Patience.  Lots of patience! Lol!  (We can laugh now..) 😃  As soon as the last bucket arrived, we were at the courts to work within 3 hours.   Although 7 days of long hours for many volunteers was a challenge all of it’s own, I think the vision of what would be, kept everyone going, working through heat and a few threats of thunderstorms.

We have 4 beautiful courts now.  A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who made this possible.  You all know who you are..  😃😃😃  Now, we all get to enjoy the fruits of everyones labour.

Currently, there is recreational pickleball on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.  Starting at 7:30am when it’s going to be very hot outside, moving to 8 and 8:30 as it gets cooler.  All levels are welcome.

There will soon be group times added specifically for intermediate players and also times for advanced /competitive play. (Once decided, it will be posted here)

Keep in mind, all players can get their own group together to play anytime outside of the times above.  The gate is unlocked and ready for pickleball!   Enjoy! 😎👍

We Can Finally Get Started!!

The last of our back ordered product has finally arrived!!
We are more than excited and ready to get on with this project. Yay!!

Many of you have offered to help and this is much appreciated. I will update the progress and schedule as we go.. our plans are tentative, depending on the weather co-operating with us.

Saturday: starting at 9am, a final pressure wash, followed by applying the resurfacer to the entire area. We will need 1 person in addition to what we have.

Sunday: starting at 9am, we will be taping off outside of all the court play areas and we will be putting down 2 coats of the blue paint. We will need 8 additional people.

Monday: starting at 9am, we will be taping inside all of the blue areas and then painting all of the green area (outside courts and kitchens are green). We will need 8 additional people.

Tuesday is looking like a rain day, so won’t plan yet, but the next day will be all of the line taping and line painting.

Please let me know if you can or want to help.. once we have he right number of people each day, I will put an update here..

Side note to any volunteers… where shoes and clothes that you no intention of wearing again.. can be pretty messy..😊
We have disposable gloves for everyone. If you have knee pads, bring them, especially for Sunday and Monday. A few extra utility knives may br handy too.

A lot of work, but the end result will be so worth it! There will be nothing left to do, but play PICKLEBALL!!!

Strowger Blvd Update..

-On Wednesday, The city had the 20 squares where the post holes are, all patched with asphalt.
-The city completed the pressure wash on Friday.
-The majority of product arrived on Thursday. Unfortunately, 30 gallons of resurfacer / leveller product was back ordered and they tell us we will get it next Friday. Sadly, this puts our progress on hold to some degree. We can do crack filling, but we need a 24 hour window of no rain. Hopefully the opportunity will arise before the remainder of product arrives. Thank you to all who have offered to assist with the work to be done. We will keep everyone updated and will ask for help when we feel the weather is right for the job. 😊

Strowger Blvd Courts Update

It has been a GOAL to have courts ready by June 1st since ordering the products on April 25th. In order for everything to be done by then, the following all has to fall into place.

1. The product has to be in Brockville. Unfortunately, it’s not here yet. Original date of delivery was May 10th. Now we understand May 28th.
2. 20 – 1’X1’ holes need to be filled with asphalt. The holes were made late last fall when we had 8 permanent post holes done and 12 holes for the 100 foot chain link fence that was installed between the two existing tennis courts. The asphalt company that does this work for the city, closes for the winter and reopens on May 15th. We are on their schedule to have this done.
3. Next, is a pressure wash of all of the cracks. Approximately 120 feet of mainly structural cracks.
4. Weather co-operating.. (no rain, and a low, no lower than 12c for 48 hours) we will ask for volunteers to join us to complete the crack filling. A dozen people would be ideal. Approximately 2 hours work for everyone.
5. A final pressure wash necessary for entire court surface as well as out of bound areas. (120’ X 60’)
6. Applying the resurfacer / leveller. Again, good weather will by our guide to our timeline
7. Two coats of paint to the entire area, all pre measured and adhering to exact court size. This should be able to be completed in one good day
8. Taping for all of the white lines. (Baseline, kitchen and sidelines)
9. Painting all of the taped lines
10. Applying a top coat (to preserve the newly painted courts) to the entire area.

A number of people have volunteered already and we will need additional volunteers. We will use Facebook and the blog to get the word out, with as much lead time as possible, for each task that needs to be done. At this point the weather is our biggest determining factor.

The end result will be 4 brand new pickleball courts. In past years, we have had 20+ people out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings throughout the summer and early fall. We will continue with that schedule, however, anyone can arrange their own games anytime they want, as it is city owned, it’s open to everyone! 😊

Strowger Outside Pickleball Update….

Looks like our outside time has come to an end for this summer, fall season.. On a positive note, our new posts and nets have arrived! The fence and posts are scheduled to be installed early in the week. This will mean no more pickleball on that court until late spring 2019, once we have our resurfacing and court painting finished, including all the new lines which will complete the four new courts. Yay!! It’s been a long time coming, but it will be well worth the wait!

However, as we are hoping to entice a few more entrants into the games, the deadline for registration is being extended to the end of May.

Follow the link below to the website for District 9 information. At the bottom of the page, there is a “Click here” link that takes you to the registration form, or you can print the form from the attachment included with this e-mail.

You can give your completed form and entry fee ($12) to Jeff Singleton or Jim Murphy.

A Message from George De Jong..

(Copied from Brockville Pickleball Facebook page)

We have had great turnouts at all the PB courts lately, however the Centennial Church and the Wall St. Church courts will not be open after the end of May.
The good news is that the plans for the courts on Strowger Boulevard are moving along. We have developed a budget and outlined the work that needs to be done. We will need volunteers for each project as they come along.
The City of Brockville is contributing some of the costs but we need to raise approximately $10,000 additionally. Thanks to those who have donated to the project.
We have started to fundraise and need to reach out to the community for their support. If you have a contact at any of the businesses or organizations that you think will support us financially let us know.

George
